Congratulations Pennsylvania Wing Members!

Compliance Inspection Graded
"Highly Successful"

7 May 2012

Team CAP Pennsylvania:

I am excited and pleased to announce that Mission 4: Excellence Through a Spirit of Service, played out over the past three days, as the CAP Pennsylvania Wing underwent their Compliance Inspection resulting in a top grade of "Highly Successful". Results included 39 "Commendables" and 3 "Benchmark Candidates"

Earning this top level performance rating can only be attained through teamwork, determination, and a passion for excellence. I am thankful and proud to work with such an incredible group of officers and cadets.

A special thank you to all of our dedicated Wing Staff Officers, whose passion for excellence and diligence to duty was demonstrated over these past months as we prepared for and successfully executed this inspection. Thanks also goes to our commanders throughout the wing whose dedication drives superior performance in our units.

Going forward we have many additional opportunities to continue to serve with excellence and I look forward to an incredible summer filled with great cadet activities, senior officer training, and continued service to our community, state, nation and each other.

With my deepest gratitude for your service,

Col Brandon

Commander

Pennsylvania Wing

Civil Air Patrol

About the Wing Compliance Inspections:

CAP Wings undergo this inspections every four years, checking each wing's mission critical readiness and organizational effectiveness and efficiency while also looking at the ability to manage and implement all three of CAP's core missions - emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs.

Four possible grades are possible: Highly Successful, Successful, Marginal and Unsatisfactory.

Highly Successful means that the wing's performance or operations go above and beyond standards, exceeding mission requirements.

Lt Col Bruce Brinker

Lt Col Bruce Brinker
18 Feb 1951 - 3 Apr 2012

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I convey to you the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Lt Col Bruce Brinker, following a heroic battle with cancer.

Bruce will be remembered fondly as a loving husband, father, grandfather and by all of the officers and cadets of Pennsylvania Wing as a kind and gentle leader who inspired generations of young men and women to great success.

Col Brinker served his community and others in many important ways, but he will most notably be remembered for his service to our cadets as the Pennsylvania Wing Director of Cadet Programs and the former Hawk Mountain Ranger School Commander.

The kindred spirit of a great leader never leaves us. When you feel a helping hand or a gentle push forward, know that he is with you. The song you hear in the wind is our encouragement to live as he did, with laughter in his heart, honor in his soul, never-ending courage, and an endless love for others that defies the test of time.

Rest in Peace Bruce,

Col Sandra E Brandon

Commander, PA Wing

Science center's flight simulators turn public into 'Top Gun' pilots

By Rick Wills, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, December 18, 2011

Jake Kern of Oakdale was thrilled to be flying -- albeit in a simulated Cessna 182.
"It's great. You get fly the airplane. Then you get to crash it," said Jake, 8, who used the simulators on display on Saturday in the Carnegie Science Center.
The Civil Air Patrol sponsored the event in celebration of its 70th anniversary and of the 108th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight on Dec. 17, 1903.
By early afternoon, about 200 people had conducted simulated flights.
"It was a lot of fun. I've always wanted to fly. I probably just watched "Top Gun" too many times," said Matt Stewart of Pine in reference to the Tom Cruise movie about a naval aviator.
Maj. Kevin Berry, commander of the Civil Air Patrol's Squadron 712 in Butler, oversaw construction of the flight simulators to advance the unit's aerospace education mission.
